Rocker cover gasket Replacement

What is a rocker cover gasket and how does it work?

The aluminium or plastic cover bolted on the engine cylinder head is called rocker cover, the function of rocker cover is to keep the engine oil inside the cylinder head and stops it from leaking out, this task is accomplished by the rocker cover gasket. With time the rocker cover gasket becomes brittle and its ability to hold the engine oil inside the cylinder head decreases hence the engine oil starts leaking from the rocker cover.

When to consider replacing a rocker cover gasket?

  • When engine Oil starts seeping or dripping.
If you see oil leakage on the top of the engine cylinder head from the contact point of rocker cover and cylinder head its time to change the rocker cover gasket.
  • When engine Oil starts accumulating inside the spark plug.
If you find out the engine oil is leaking towards the spark plugs and starts accumulation around spark plugs its time to change rocker cover gasket.
  • When you smell engine oilburning smell.
If you observe engine oil burning  smell while driving get your car checked for oil leak and if the oil leak is from the rocker cover area then its time to change the rocker cover gasket.
  • When you see patches of engine oil under the car where its parked.
If you observe engine oil patches on your drive way,  get your car checked for engine oil leak and if the oil leak is from the rocker cover area then its time to change the rocker cover gasket.

If you notice any of the above mensioned signs, get your car checked by a professional mechanic.

Is it safe to drive with a faulty rocker cover gasket ?
