P0001 OBD-II Fault Code: Fuel Volume Regulator Control Circuit / Open

P0001 trouble code definition

The P0001 code indicates a problem with the electrical circuit that connects to your fuel pressure regulator. It may also be related to other codes, such as: P0002, P0003 or P0004.

What does P0001 code means?

P0001 is generic OBD-II code indicating a problem with the fuel pressure regulator circuit of the fuel injection rail on the engine. The ECM controls and regulates fuel pressure from your fuel pump to engine through this circuit. When a fault arises in the circuit, it will alert ecu and a Check Engine Light is set on which can cause poor fuel economy and can possibly damage the engine.

What causes the P0001 code?

There are several causes of fuel volume regulator failure:

  • Disconnected plug to fuel regulator.
  • Possible corrosion on the sensor connector.
  • Damage to sensor wiring to ECM.
  • Leaky fuel pressure regulator.
  • Damaged fuel pump.
  • The ECM is damaged.

What are the symptoms of the P0001 code?

The P0001 code will generate a Check Engine Light on the dashboard / dash and will likely affect:

  • Engine performance while driving.
  • Possible stagnation.
  • You can make the exhaust show smoke in various colours, from black to white.
  • Fuel economy will not be efficient.

What repairs can fix the P0001 code?

The most common possible repairs to fix the P0001 code are as follows:

  • Connect a professional scan tool. Make sure the code is there.
  • Check for other errors. Clear the error code to see if it returns.
  • Analyse ECM data.
  • Vehicle road test.
  • Check if the P0001 returns.
  • Check all of the above. (Wiring, leaks, etc.)

Also diagnose the problem with the devices mentioned above (diagnostic tester, voltmeter). Sensor signals should be analyzed to determine where the problem is. If the signals are OK, we should go to the wiring or the computer. Replace the defective component, wiring or ECM (requires programming).
